Weep No More My Lady

The Run for the Roses posts Saturday, May 2, 6:24 PM. So get on down to your local OTB, place your bets, and scoot a boot right back home; for there is simply no reason to drink a mint julep made with bad bourbon and too too much sugar. After all, good bourbon is the cornerstone of this drink. And Derby Day, hell, comes but once a year. Cheers, and may the best horse win.
MINT JULEP
Simple Syrup -
Muddle 1 cup fresh mint with 1 cup sugar and 1 cup water in a saucepan on the stove. Bring water to boil. When sugar is dissolved, take off the stove to cool.
The Drink -
Pour just shy of an ounce mint syrup into a highball
Add crushed ice*
Add 2 ounce pour of Bourbon**
Add a splash of water and top off with more ice if needed
Garnish with a mint sprig
*Crushed ice is key
**A high-end Bourbon is more key. This year I’ll be concocting my juleps with Blanton’s Single Barrel Bourbon
Pictured is the mighty Secretariat running in the 1973 Kentucky Derby. He would go on to win the Triple Crown that year, setting new track records in both the Derby and the Preakness Stakes, and a new world record in the Belmont Stakes, a historic race where Secretariat finished 31 lengths out front of his nearest competition.

I love a mint julip, but I think the Kentucky Derby stand-by could use a partner in crime! I found this delish sounding drink (a take on a traditional caipirinha) that would be just as good as the julip. Check it out:
